A cardiologist is a specially trained physician skilled in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. In addition to four years of medical school, this specialized training includes three years in the study of internal medicine and three or more years dedicated to the study of cardiovascular medicine. A minimum of ten years of clinical and educational preparation must be completed before a cardiologist is certified.
